full time System utility App

at Shibi Kannan in Any

The project is an app that has two primary functions. The 1st function would let users temporarily hide other apps. The second function would let users temporarily disable the phone's menu button or prevent the user from accessing the phones settings. The function of hiding the apps is by far the most important of these two functions. When I say apps needs to be hidden, what I am really trying to do is prevent is the app from inadvertently being launched. I figure by simply hiding the app (or the app's icon) from the phone's screen and the app drawer it would be easy to protect that app from being launched. Other options I've thought of in-place of hiding the apps, but are not as clean, would be something along the lines of temporarily moving the desired apps into a folder that required a password to open, or perhaps adding a function to the desired apps that requires a password to launch the selected app. The bottom line is that I am looking for functionality that would prevent an individual from inadvertently launching an app, or even prohibit someone from launching an app - like in the case where someone loans his or her phone to someone else, but doesn’t want the person who is borrowing it to launch certain apps.

An example of the app in use would be the following: A user would launch the app and with-in the app they will see a list of apps which are loaded on their phone. Next to each app in that list would be a toggle switch that lets the user hide or show that particular app. The function to show and hide apps should apply to all third party apps as well as all apps that came with their phone. After the user has selected the apps they wish to hide, there would be another “master” toggle switch that essentially turns the ability to hide all those apps on and off. This way the user can simply re-show all the apps and re-hide all the apps which they've already selected to be hidden with this one “master” switch instead of having to un-hide and re-hide each app individually.

The functionality of the app is similar to a feature in the “LauncherPro” app. In “LauncherPro” a user can select apps that they would like to be hidden from view in their app drawer. The primary difference is that the “LauncherPro” app is essentially a new skin or home-screen that someone can use for their phone instead of the stock skin that came with their phone (such as HTC Sense) or the standard Android skin, I don't necessarily want my app to be another skin, I simply want it to hide apps from with-in which ever skin/home-screen a user may be using.

Another example of this app can be found in a couple of IPhone Apps, that are available on jail broken IPhones, call “Poof” or “BossPrefs”. Both of these apps offers similar functionality to what I am looking to create with this Android app. You can check a YouTube demo on those apps here:

Regarding the second functionality involving temporarily disabling of the phone's menu button, what I am really looking for is functionality that disables the ability to adjust the phone's general settings. I figure that since the phone's settings are accessed through the phone's menu button disabling the menu button would disable the ability to adjust the phone's settings, but their might be a better way to accomplish this. This functionality would be used in a case such as where someone lends their phone to someone else and they want to prevent the person they lent it to from adjusting the phone's settings.
